Amber, The Earliest Rock Candy

Okay, here's that gag from awhile back that I pulled from the blog because it just wasn't resolved enough. Recently I tried to re-think that idea and make it work but it just wasn't going to happen, and after struggling with it for a day I trashed it and came up with a completely new one that I like even better, yet still using 80% of the original drawing. I don't consider it a solid gag, but I know it's an improvement over what it was before.
Sometimes gag writing can literally take you out on a tree limb with a thousand different branches leading to a new solution, and it's amazing how it can evolve from the initial idea to something completely different when it's finally finished. If it works in the end then the journey was worth it, and you quickly forget the trash can full of discarded drawings that got you there. -Ted

  1. do you write your gags or go straight to thumbnails? I go straight to thumbnails and make the words fit the picture, not vice versa. Dont know if that's the best way....

My favorite is the guy stuffing his face. HA!
    THE DRAWINGS ARE SO FUNNY!

I think maybe the title is what prevents it from being as solid as you would like. Maybe call it, Early Canned Meat, or Earliest known Pickles, or maybe Earliest known form of Spam, or something that has to do with preserving food?

Or maybe go a candy route, like, Earliest known form of Tootsie Pops (Solid outside, Chewy inside)

  2. Hey Tiff, all good points and I think you're definitely right about the title. Just wondering, if it's about food then will people get that its amber? Wait, maybe I have it.... I'll change the title. Thanks for the input. -Ted

  3. Excellent! I love this one. The amber (kind of a petrified "sweet" tree sap right?) was a great "rock candy" idea. I love that! Then to have the prize inside was genius! This cracked me up . . . great drawing too.

  4. hehehe nice one as usual, Ted. It always great to see details that you put into your artwork.. example.. I keep wondering what's the things stuck on the seller's belt? is that bug bombs or something else? That's a story in itself. :) Hope all is going great at your end, sir.

  5. That's a change machine, Charles. They dispense coins quickly for sellers who aren't near a cash register. When I was a kid the ice cream lady used to have one when she'd come down our street.

Thanks, Belf! I think it works better now that I have a title that explains the situation better. I can thank Tiffanny for that!

  6. haha I find this totally charming! The title does explain it better, but I think it's funny even without...especially with the guy on the left biting. A totally "caveman" way of trying to get the prize inside. Love your blog! :)

  9. HAHAHAHA! This one's an instant classic! Good gravy, you're a genius! The nonchalant elbow lean kills me. And the guy cramming the entire rock in his mouth... BAHAHAHA! Prize inside! Have you ever seen those scorpion and cricket lollipops they sell in places like Arizona? Ewww. This is bitchin' sick. In a good way. (trying to balance out all the love you have going on this one) :D

  10. Bella, yes I have, and I just don't get it. I'd have to keep pulling the lollipop out of my mouth to inspect it and make sure I hadn't gone past the safety layer. Or maybe you just keep licking it until you feel a leg scrape your tongue... Makes me gag just thinkin' about it.

    Thanks so much, Carrie.

Megan and Taesoo, thanks for following! I finally hit 50!
