Grumps Only!

First cartoon of the New Year. Yaaaay! Sorry for my absence, I don't have a good excuse, but hope this gag makes up for it.
I owe my friend Ethan Spaulding a thank-you for the inspiration on this one. I had the idea but I was drawing it all wrong, so he showed me a better way to stage it, which is his specialty. It reads much better now, so thanks Ethan. He's a director/producer/artist extraordinary at Warner Brothers. His blog is called Operation Gutterball, stop by and say hello to him. Don't forget to nag him about posting roughs only :) He seems to hate cleaning anything up but he should because his art is dynamite!

  1. haha, the clown is cute, and that's saying a lot since I find clowns to be more scary than funny. and he's handing out puppies too!

  4. HA! PUPPIES...gotta love a clown trying to leak happy all over crotchety old coots. Love the hot pink against the sepia hues and the cute little tail wagging tongues.

  6. Never a shortage of grumpy people...I think you Ted...are the clown in this work..trying to make grumpy people like us, the majority, unhappy by not allowing us to be happy being grumpy!

  8. who can say no to little red puppies?! I couldn't! what a jerk. I hope I never turn into a grump :)

I checked out your friend's blog. You both are lucky to have enormous amounts of talent, and to have a friend to bounce critiques off of.

Do all amazing artists have other artist buddies to bounce off? Is it possible to get good in isolation?

  11. Great start for 2012! I confess, I tend to get a bit grumpy when waiting in a long line... could do with a handy hugs-&-puppies man!

  12. Mauricio, it's always a challenge for me to make clowns cute, and not creepy, so I was especially proud of that face.

Yaaaay! Happy Janet would be kicked out of the Grumpy Club. High five!

Tek, it's true! I'm going to dig deeper into the Grumpy sack for more!

Thanks, Jennifer. Now isn't it about time for a new post from you????? (I should talk)

Ethan, by now you have a semi-truckload of roughs compiled that need to be cleaned up. Will you ever finish them??? Ha Ha.

Rod, I completely misunderstand your understanding :P

Elizabeth, I'm glad I'm back too! I'll try and stay back.

Thank you, Tiff. Yeah, it helps to be surrounded by artists every day. The feedback is very important. It's a lot more difficult when you don't have it.

Seema, thanks for stopping. I always look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, Dawn. That's the very best compliment for a cartoonist.

Elizabeth, I know what you're talking about. I have no patience for lines anymore and they can be 20 miles long sometimes.

-okay, that about covers the responses. Boy are my fingers tired.

  17. I swore, I have left a comment to this already but I don't see it. I said something like "I felt like that grumpy woman in the line" :)

Hey, yes, no line drying of sheets and I make sure there are no creepy crawlies on the clothes. Actually I line dry the clothes inside the house unless it is in the summer when the clothes will dry in two hours. I also dry the clothes in the shade in the covered carport, never directly out in the sun. I also hate folding. I'd rather iron. I do like pressed shirts as I wear suits to work but on fridays, I love wearing very casual clothes.

My husband told me about a story when he was a Peace Corps Volunteer. He was traveling in India and line dried his jeans in the sun. He put it on when it was dry not knowing that there were ants in his pants, literally!!!
