Magpie Reality Show

Felt like drawing birds this week. Last Friday evening I went to a bird club meeting, since I have one myself. It was my first time doing something like that. There were a lot of really cool birds there, and kinda noisy as you can imagine. But I didn't connect with the people there for some reason, and I wondered if it was because maybe bird owners are different than say dog or cat owners. Dog owners have always seemed more people friendly to me. So I began to wonder if certain personality types are drawn to certain types of pets without even knowing it. Birds are naturally wary of strangers, well most birds anyway, so maybe their owners are that way too. Dogs are more gregarious, so maybe their owners are more outgoing. Cats can be calculating, but I'm not sure about their owners. So I'm thinking, sometimes I'm a bird kinda guy and sometimes I'm a dog kinda guy, but since I'm not into cats, maybe I don't share their outlook on the world.
Okay, I'm babbling...  Just jump in anywhere and interrupt me, please. :)

  2. hmmmmmmmm...wonder what that says about me????? I have a bird, a cat, AND my favorite (next to horses) is the dog! I must be an oxymoron. :) Anyway. Enough about me. I LOVE this piece. I think it is one of my absolute favorites, of yours. It reminds me of the crows, in the Grand Canyon, who unzip backpacks and steal things.

  3. Oh, Ted, you make me laugh again!!!!!! :)))))))))))
is good to come to your blog to laugh, indeed!
    OK. I'm addicted to dogs,
no birds (I prefer them free)
    no cats (they scratch)
no fish (do not show affection)
    Good week for you!

  5. That's a good observation, Ted, and I think dog owners probably are more friendly as dogs are. Cats? Don't get me started on cats. Let's just say there's nothing like a dog running to greet you when you get home and jumping up and down at the mere sight of you. But I LOVE the concept of taking human habits and re-attributing to animals that may already do those :)

  6. I am now a fan of Kevin. Btw, I think, based on your analysis, that I am calculatingly gregarious.

  7. Hahahaha, that is just brilliant! The hoarding magpie! This could spawn a whole series of bird reality shows...

As to the part about cat people, I am tempted to hiss at you. But then... I wouldn't want you to stop feeding me these hilarious cartoons. So I'll purr instead. How's that for calculating? ;-)

  8. I've only had doberman dogs and hamsters as pets...well the dogs were not mine but my fathers. As a child I used to be very scared of them but they were very intelligent and loyal, with time I learnt to love them and now they are not here I miss them a lot.
I don't know much about cats and birds as pets. They seem very independent animals.

  9. Great cartoon, I don't think I have enough space in my house to have a bird with a problem like that though :)

  10. I live with lots of dogs and lots of birds. Interestingly, my dogs have more hoarding tendencies than my birds do!

  11. Hahaha! Hilarious! I love animals in stylish hats and all the details are really great. I have also watched a few hoarding shows and you have illustrated it pretty perfectly. Except, you may be missing a very sad, very frustrated family member (child or sibling). For the crying.

I also think you're right that different types of pets suit different personalities better - but there is always going to be another group who gets the same pet they grew up with even if they don't seem to match the personality. So, you need to find THOSE bird people who also like things you like. Also, there are cats that act like dogs and dogs that act like cats. Ah variety, is it the spice of life? Eek, apparently babbling is contagious!

  12. Happy Friday to you, too, Ted! It's never to early to call a day a Friday..oh how I love Fridays! This is so telling. Interesting re: birds being wary of strangers...I guess I am a bit of a bird girl myself if that's true! But we have a dog, and yes, I'm pretty much a dog person I'd say. I love that they are such friendly birds in your illo..willing to help out a hoarder! Wishing you a very happy yesterday, and tomorrow as well as Wednesday, Ted!

  13. Just as long as it is not a snake, or lizard. I really cannot understand why someone would keep a salmonella source inside the house and some animals just cannot be tamed. But your illustration! It is wonderful.

  16. HAHAHAHAHA! Oh, I LOVE this one! Hahahahahaha. Great use of a measuring spoon. And the paper parasol is fantastic! Hehehehe.

I have a pet rock. What does that mean, Ted? What does that mean?!

No, actually, I have a dog. But I'm not a big people-person. I think my dog is my people substitute.

    Have a superb weekend!
