The Distracted Clown

Here's my last gag about staring at phones when you should be paying attention. It was an old rough from a couple years ago that I decided to draw up today because it's still a valid problem. It's rare to pull up to any intersection in this town without seeing at least one driver staring down at their phone intensely, or typing on it, and continuing to stare at it as they drive off. I guess it bothers me particularly because I ride motorcycles, and it's dangerous enough riding motorcycles in L.A. without these 'screen zombies' behind the wheel of a speeding car. Laws have been made to curb this problem but there doesn't seem to be a solution that works. People just have to stare at screens 24/7, I guess.

Okay, that's all I have to say about that, I'll shut up now till my next post. Bye.

  1. So true! I feel bad for that clown in the purple, but I suppose the clown in the orange just had to check that "important" facebook message. I'd like to see how your clowns (or even cavemen) would interact through social media.

  2. Damnit Maurico beat me to the first comment.

THIS IS HILARIOUS, and very pertinent commentary to our time!

You're so clever, Ted. I wish I was as clever as you :)

  3. This made me smile. I was at the beach the other day and my little lad darted in front and crouched down in front of a teenager who was texting. The teenager only just saved himself from a sand bath.

  4. Yep, they're everywhere. Those laws designed to curb distracted screen zombies do little good. There are even helpful reminder signs around. DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE. DO NOT PEE WHILE BLACKBERRYING. (Maybe screen pop up versions would get more attention from the target audience. WARNING! ONCOMING TRUCK!)

Alas, innocent clowns continue to suffer due to the carelessness of those who need constant electronic stimulation.

  5. Oh I am with you! Very dangerous and just look at the expression on the other clown's face!

  6. Haha clever...if the other clown had sent him an SMS earlier, he would have been ready....maybe he had and he was just reading it.

  7. Oh, it's terrible,
I have seen cops talking on the phone and driving the police car!
Ok. Apart from this you made me laugh!
    thanks and good week!

  8. It IS quite a problem, and I really like that you and your talent can draw attention to issues like this. But since I am afraid of clowns, I'm not too broken up about this particular (hilarious) circumstance.

  10. nah, you should talk about this because it really is a major problem. I also hate people walking outside the side walks with headphones. It is just too dangerous.

  11. Unfortunately common sense is becoming increasingly rare. Whether it is in a car or during interaction with a person, it just does not seem to dawn on some people that what they are doing is wrong and in the case of driving, dangerous.

  12. Wonderfully illustrated the way you hinted at the floor and the stands so far below! Great composition and characters too. I don't even want to start about folks texting instead of interacting with the real world, let alone the driving ones! Arrrrgh!

  13. You portrayed this perfectly, virtual lives seem to be more important than real lives these days ...
I love your cartoon but I hate so much when I see this kind of selfish behaviour on the streets.
