Hobbit Humor!

The Hobbit movie opens this week so I thought I'd draw up something with that in mind. Not the usual gag, just a goofy drawing based on this play on words that popped into my head. Kinda weird but that's the kind of stuff I have going on upstairs pretty much all the time. Gotta get those demons out on paper and be done with them. As for the movie, I'm not holding out much hope. It's such a simple story, why would they need to tell it in three parts? And it's shot in 48fps which up till now I haven't cared for the look of. I actually read the Lord of the Rings first, and the Hobbit later, which is backwards. It spoiled me, so I wasn't as impressed with The Hobbit's simple story which was written more for children. But The Hobbit was so successful with everyone when it was first published that the trilogy followed later for adults. The trilogy is a great read, of course, and it's never been out of print.
If any of you go see the movie let me know what you think.

    1. Is that what they mean by 'this joke will kill 'em'?
Yeah, if I saw this in real life I'd be dyin' with you. Wish I knew where to go to see it happen.

  2. Having that sort of stuff in your head Ted is a good thing!..BTW is that a photo of your head to the right...it looks like a funny guy anyway! The Hobbit was my very first book that I actually read from cover to cover....(in a tent of course.)

    1. To be a true cartoonist you have to be funny looking, too. Isn't that sad?

  4. Hi Ted - your work is awesome, thanks for sharing it! I got to go and see an advanced screening of the Hobbit a couple of days ago and actually liked it! Yes, it is different from the book - but the choices they made were good ones I think - it was definitely entertaining. And the sets and scenery were fantastic (however I am a New Zealander so I am probably biased hehe :))

  5. I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but am not all that excited about The Hobbit. Put THIS scene in it, though, and I just might have to fork over the cash for a ticket!!! I think it improve the reviews dramatically!

    2. There's only one thing more fulfilling to a cartoonist than LOL, and that's coffee spewing. Sorry I missed it.

  7. I am stoked about the Hobbit. Loved reading reading LOTR and the Hobbit and have been so excited to see the prequel on the silver screen (Richard Armitage and Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom, Luke Evans - COME ON!!!!) I've had the tickets for a week and I'm taking my mom for her birthday. :) Love your pun, even though it is a stretch.

Glad you liked the pun, but 'stretch' was last weeks word.

  9. Oh my GAAAAAAAAAAD! BAHAHAHA!!! Oh, that is hysterical, I love it! I have some teenage boys a few houses down who practice in their garage with the door wide open. The next time I see them, I'll be picturing them as old hobbits. Man, if I start laughing and they come beat me up, it'll be all your fault!

  10. I love goofy...and you do it so well, Ted. So much hilarity going on in this one, I don't quite know where to start. So I won't ;)

  11. I like the way you think. It's pretty much similar how I think except what comes out of my mind is so corny, not funny. I read the new movie made many nauseated and sick. Being that I get sick with ordinary movies, I won't even try watching this one until it comes out on dvd so I can actually recline in comfort in case I get dizzy or just completely stop watching and do laundry instead. Is that you on the sidebar. Very nice! I like your haircut!!!

    3. Thanks. I style it myself with a weed-wacker and 90wt gear oil.
In truth, I'm just happy to still have hair.

    4. Oh yes absolutely! It is amazing how our priorities change through the years and we value things that will totally be considered weird by young people. Hair is one of them, that, a good back and knees and having a full set of natural teeth!!! Ugh, I sound like an 80 year old woman.

    5. And by the way, you should incorporate that idea of yours about two old men reading surrounded by books and the other guy wishing he had the answer...

  12. Oh, man, I've missed your jokes, Ted! I'm glad to be back to blogging. This one's definitely a very Teddy gag in that it really has your sense of personality to it. I actually saw the Hobbit Thursday night at midnight and it was a fun time. Yes, you're right that the story felt a little more simplified but I suppose it was truer to the spirit of the book in that sense. Either way, I was just glad to be going back to Middle-earth so you won't get any complaints for me. Except the 48 fps, that felt a bit annoying visually at times.

  13. The Hobbit 2- Electric Boogaloo! You could do another hobbit gag where Bilbo is getting his hairy feet trimmed at supercuts. The hairstylist could ask if he wants a little hair gel with that. Female hobbits with their feet hair in curlers etc.

  16. Ha ha funny hobbit illustration. I'm looking forward to seeing the Hobbit, but I'm sure I won't get around to it until it's on DVD. I enjoyed reading the Hobbit - before the Lord of the Rings! I don't know, reading things backwards can really mess a person up ;)
