One Man's Trash Is Another Dog's Treasure.

I found three different versions of this idea roughed out as I was going through my stack of old gags. This one made me chuckle so that's good enough for me. I cleaned it up for you and shredded the other two.
I wonder if old beach-combing dogs dream of finding that elusive canned ham some day?

  1. I thought this was funny because of the irony that a dog would need a metal detector to hunt food....is his nose not working because of old age?..No..it was probably because he is hunting for treasure and happened to stumble upon this old food can. The wagging tail is always amusing on your dogs.

    1. My thinking process was almost equal as yours..... but both points of view work well !

    2. Yeah, I guess I didn't give this one enough thought. I'm guilty of being a lazy cartoonist rushing the gag. ha.
Maybe I should have made the hole look deeper. Is a dog nose more powerful than a metal detector for searching for buried food cans? If it is, then this joke is a goner.

    3. Not lazy Mr.Ted at all. In fact you are the opposite. Its what I like about your cartoons..the way you think/draw is unique to you and gives us the audience, your insight into life...which is always interesting and very Funny!!!! The reason, I wrote what I did about an old dog with a dysfunctional snout...was it seemed to fit the age group of people who metal detect as a hobby perfectly!

  2. To answer your question : it dependents on the "best before" date !

  3. Hahahahaha! Okay, the ecstatically wagging tail is the kicker for me!!!! I was thinking the same thing about the nose vs. metal detector, I guess because I have a young pup in the house! Very funny stuff, as usual.

  6. I think he uses both nose and metal detector. The smell of the ocean can be strong and confusing, you can't be wasting your time digging holes when you are hungry.

    1. Yes, Ana, that makes perfect sense to me. I knew there was a reason why I drew that ocean into the background.
Okay, I'm ready to move onto the next gag.

  7. This is funny, Ted, but hopefully you didn't shred the other two and were just speaking metaphorically. I wish I hadn't thrown away my first figure drawing pads from school, but alas, I have and now they're probably on some trash collector's wall.

    1. Oh, I destroyed them alright, I do it all the time. They're just ideas. I usually have quite a few different versions as I go through the process of resolving a gag. I end up picking the best and tossing the rest.
It's nice to keep a few drawings around from your early days to remind yourself how much you've improved. One of my Art Center instructors recommended doing just that. I believe he's right, but there's no reason to keep all those crappy drawings, just a few. Thanks, Mauricio.
